nuther riesling

dr loosen graacher himmelreich kabinett 2007
gold/straw; simple nose, lime rind, very little peach, ripe white grape?, someone said pear;off dry ... sweet but not cloying, grapey, lime, some golden delicious, not complex but with a nice almost plump mouthfeel (less complex at this stage but broader than the berkasteler lay 07), mineral/chalky; very, very nice juicy underlying acid especially at the very end of each gulp; long ... and there's this subtle fresh peach flavour that goes on and on; for what it's got now, balanced; 8%; kept chucking it down and swallowing hard :-); BANG! price creeping up. pork burger and roast pork (too lean). see the 06.

13 February 2009

friday night

st urbans hof ockfener bockstein kabinett 2007
straw; low keyed citrus (lime/orange), wet stone like, someone said jasmine ; off dry, citrus, hint of red delicious, mineral/chalk, savoury/ almost salty?, hint of toast?; lovely juicy acidity; medium length, grapey citrusy off dry finish, dried apricots?, refreshing; 8.5%; BANG! nice one. with some grilled cod and chicken ... food was not happening.

02 February 2009

bits and pieces

1)nicolas potel chablis 1er cru montmains 2006
straw; citrus (lime/grapefruit?), slightly floral, nectarine; follows onto palate, a little ripe?, bit rich for a chablis; lotsa minerals/chalk and acid (suck on some lemon rind); longish finish with the aforesaid lemon bits; BANG!

2)carlos serres onomastica 1995 (rioja reserva)
ruby, still dark; cherry, plum, vanilla/wood, spicy; quite rich with dark fruit, woody vanilla; lots of fine tannins with just enough acid so i didn't gag; it don't taste like a rioja, almost like some medium weight barossa!?; medium/big bodied; medium length; 13.5%; POP! ... but for the price, maybe POOP!

3)dr loosen bernkasteler lay kabinett 2007
straw; lime, peach, grape!; more than off dry almost sweet (but no where near the 06), lime, grapefruit, oats, red delicious, underlying chalk and stone, fleshy kind of feel; very nice juicy mouthwatering acid; long; you keep wanting to fill the glass; 8%; BANG! woud be nice to see it in a coupla years.

4)pikes clare riesling reserve 2002
deep straw/ gold; lime, cumquat, stone, dried apricots; follows onto palate, maybe some golden delicious?, hint of kero; has softened ... aging and mellowing nicely; acid still there to keep things fresh though; longish said dried apricot/citrus rind finish; BANG!

04 October 2008

nightcap

at a friend's.

1)chateau gaumaran 2002 (medoc ... supposedly merlot led ... dunno)

none of us had seen one before. this sample came via hongkers. a search on the net revealed very little, even then in french.

seems like this is one insular label with a serious seige mentality......some weird (albeit badly translated) stuff on a site featuring this stuff:

Natural demand side of our French wine and safeguard our AOC and our know-how!

Technologies French wine is much more healthy and hygienic than s'autorisent producers in the southern hemisphere.

There was no difference between a Chilean sauvignon, California or New Zealand.

The New World wines are wines chemical which is a price while our French wines express their soil and a way of working.

The New World makes use of oenological practices (outlawed by Europe) who try to artificialize wine and transform a name of a universal standard drink "high technology".

Prefer the cork and at the same time, safeguard the ecosystem of the Mediterranean oak forest cork!

The use of cork has been certified by a favorable carbon (test implemented by Oeneo bouchonnier).

dull blood red, bit of bricking; bit of plum initially, then slowly revealed more exotic? and savoury scents, mushroom, damp earth, pickled jalapeno, soy, capsicum, latter 2 intensified as time went by; almost salty palate of said soy and capsicum/chilli (there's even a prickly aftertaste like the real thing!); fine tannins and moderate amounts of acid; textured mouthfeel like some of those riberas; longish; 12.5%; POP!,barely, didn't gag. don't even know if this is a typical bottle. anyway, a curiosity.

2)dr. loosen uziger wurzgarten riesling kabinett 2003

last of 2 dozen obtained by my aforesaid friend, rest were polished off when fresh.

gold; citrus (more oranges than lime/lemon), pear, apple (red not green, my 13 yr old friend opined), honey, kero; more than off dry; fruit follows onto the palate, orange blossom honey?, someone said pineapple, oatmeal, chalk/mineral; mouthfeel plump, rich but not flabby; enough minerality and acid to prevent things from decending into lolly water territory (03 had a sweltering summer); long; 8.5% BANG! nice one.

03 June 2008

liebfraumilch, not

had both of these recently. next-to-basic teutonic rieslings.
1) dr loosen bernkasteler lay riesling kabinett 2006
light yellow (citrine?...wanker); spritzig, lime rind, apple and a little kero on nose; follows through onto palate with some ripe pear (?); off dry is very nice but this one is just a little too sweet but luckily there's some nice acid which attempts to balance that; palate a little "disjointed" ie. starts tart, sweet and limey/ rind and then abruptly turns grapey, flabby, sugery and cloying (like 2 different drinks)...weird; light/medium bodied; medium length; need to give this one another try. FIZZLE!

2)dr loosen graacher himmelreich riesling kabinett 2006
much better ... again light yellow (well, the place i had it was dimly lit); lime/lemon rind and apple on the nose (but somehow not an emphatic as the one above); this follows through onto palate plus grape juice with some nice acid to balance things off; sweeter than off dry but bearable; light/medium bodied; long; balanced; nice indeed. BANG! [only just, bit too sweet].

both at 7.5% ...
