cheap vino courtesy of brunellogate?

argiano declassifies their 2003 brunello. here's bits of a letter they apparently circulated.

"Given the philosophy that has always inspired us at Argiano, we are unable to stand back and wait for the events to take their course. Our foremost wish is to enable our faithful customers to enjoy our excellent wine this year as well. For this reason we will make a
great sacrifice, one that is truly enormous for a winemaking company: we will declassify our top wine, our flagship."

"
In this unforgettable and unique year there will be a new label: IL DUEMILATRE DI ARGIANO. We have decided to change the name, contained in the classic label that has become our symbol, but leaving the wine unchanged in its essence, the same as ever, the same wine that on more than one occasion has permitted us to win praise and awards. We steadfastly keep to our values and our enthusiasm, which are firmly rooted in our history, dating back to 1580."

yeah ... my heart bleeds for them. let the cheap wine flow.

The Brunello Controversy: a winemaker’s perspective

by Tom Hyland

Earlier this week, I had lunch with Hans Vinding Diers, winemaker at Argiano in Sant’Angelo in Colle, one of the four initial estates named in the scandal that has now accused several dozen wineries of altering their 2003 Brunello with the possible addition of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon to this famous Sangiovese-only red. Diers was very forthright with answers to my questions about this situation and I thank him for his insight.

Diers at first wondered why Argiano was being investigated with the three other wineries, Antinori, Banfi and Frescobaldi, all of which are quite large in size (Argiano only bottles 55,000 bottles of Brunello in an average year as compared to several hundred thousand bottles from the other estates). His first encounter with the Guardia di Finanza, which is investigating this, happened when they flew helicopters over the Argiano estate this past December, presumably to see for themselves if there were Merlot or Cabernet vines intermingled with the Sangiovese.

I asked Diers how anyone could see this in December when the vines were dormant. “I thought the only way you could tell was by looking at the leaves,” I said. “Exactly,” Diers replied.

Nonetheless, later that month, the authorities impounded the remaining bottles of 2003 Brunello di Montalcino not yet shipped by the winery. As this situation has yet to be settled throughout the district, the authorities have impounded wine at dozens of other estates, all of which are under varying degrees of investigation. Diers argued that they needed to sell this wine, so a compromise was reached. Argiano is now able to ship this wine to market under a new name, Il Duemilatre di Argiano (literally, the Argiano 2003). This is the same wine as the 2003 Brunello with the same black label the winery uses to denote their signature wine.

Interestingly, Vias, the American importer for Argiano is now selling the wine under the two labels, as they received an allocation of the Brunello before it was impounded in December. They are selling the Il Duemilatre bottling to their customers at 20% less than the Brunello bottling, which should sell out very soon. I tasted the two bottlings with Diers and they are indeed the same wine. Having tasted over a thousand examples of Brunello di Montalcino over the past seven years, I can offer the opinion that this is indeed 100% Sangiovese. The color incidentally is a bright garnet, though without the intensity one finds in the finest years. Diers explains, “In a hot year, you get a lighter color such as this, one that bleaches out sooner than in a cool year.”

Diers believes this investigation is at a standstill. “They don’t know what to do now,” he commented, referring to the prosecutors handling this case. One thing that has been settled is the question about the vineyards at Argiano. “Our vineyards have been found to contain no irregularities, as far as other varieties are concerned.”

Diers has seen this all before and questions the power the authorities have in this matter. “It’s a grand Italian opera. The magistrate in this case has autonomous power and the big boys (referring to the large producers) can’t do a thing.” His closing statement, as it were, was a refrain I’ve heard often from the country’s businessmen: “In Italy, you are guilty until proven innocent.”

6-2, so?

and wengkerman said: "This team has a great future, I believe we were really unlucky not to win something this year." sigh

it's an epidemic

"handball?... what handball?" and this is not the wengker.

drinks on saturday

had this in the afternoon at the hole, brancaia blu 2001. called on the 2 usual suspects, 1 tapped up but the other had to do spring cleaning?? (er ...i'm sure it must be spring somewhere ....).

dark red, translucent; thrown a crust; plum, berries (what kind? i don't know...black?), tobacco, a whiff of vanilla and some stalkiness (never got this in earlier bottles) on the nose; medium to full bodied; fine tannins; not too much acid; rich with ripe plum, cherry/raspberry? and a bit of vanilla; biggish wine and can be had sans food (although lamb chops come to mind ... psychic ... see below); long finish; very nice but not as refreshing as something containing a larger proportion of sangiovese. still a BANG!

had this for dinner (... there were breadcrumb and proscuitto coated lamb chops!!!),

alejandro fernandez dehesa la granja seleccion 2000 [zamora(tempranillo)]

brick; berries (here we go again), spice (more like a little pepper), ham (huh? ... meat type aroma), bit of cedar, bit of damp earth and polish (?... resin, shellac ... don't quite like this but doesn't really distract too much ... not so obvious in the last bottle) on the nose; not rich like the one above, but juicy plum/prune and berries and that resin thing again; medium bodied; tannins (fine) and juicy acid in balance; smooth, long and rather easy to drink; nice; can i have another glass and chop, please? BANG! [note: balsamic????]

not amused

little blurry ... but had no permission and time.

25 April 2008

down but do we need a hlebing hand?

there may other things slightly more important than a bit o talent. violent little bugger isn't he ... sell him.

anyway someone said this recently: "If You Are First You Are First; And If You Are Second You Are Arsenal" ouch!

24 April 2008

something's fermenting

it seems that some big boys in montalcino are being investigated with regard to adulterating their brunellos ... frescobaldi, banfi, antinori, argiano ..... ??!!! apparently this started in 2003...

not with glycol (can anyone say rrrrhiesling?...) or some other nasty chemical mind you, just cheap (?) wine from other areas or from non permitted varieties.

the argiano 2001 and the banfi poggio alle mura 1999 are very very nice but hey, what do i know ...

anyway, maybe if the citizens of a certain very democratic country shy away, prices may come down for this stuff ?

anyway, what's not adulterated these days? so what if there's a bit of cab sav or merlot in it? think of it as a "super tuscan"... people pay a lot for the stuff you know... ha ha.

22 April 2008

lard di da

had lunch at an italian place (related to my pharmacy) that doesn't serve pork . . . . . . . . . decent enough shots though.

... it cannot be all about fantastic foreplay. There does need to be a climax once in a while.

2-0 ... streak broken ... decent game ... pity there's not much to play for. 3rd place should be in the bag though.

nick thompson article on Arsene's problem ... here

20 April 2008

cat's piss (my apologies to felines)

looks normal, does'nt it? well it isn't.

looks like cr*p, tastes like cr*p, it must be cr*p

had to go to a hotel for sunday lunch at their chinese restaurant ... needed a shot thereafter so went to another outlet at the same hotel. holy sh*t ... 4 times the price i pay at my pharmacy. piss weak "silly" coffee ... smooth yes but where's the body and richness. being silly myself ... went to yet another outlet at the hotel. here it's only (!) twice the price i am used to paying ... also "silly" coffee but only worse, if that is possible (and it is)...like weak, day old percolated coffee in a demitasse ... err is crema a fiat?

decent hotel, trained(?) staff, serious looking machines, high prices... still cr*p. over the years, never had good coffee at a hotel... ok maybe once.

19 April 2008

filling up

could not get out of town on friday evening because of the traffic ... so i went down to the pharmacy for dinner.

they had some seafood specials, ordered the seafood in brodetto ... not so hot, they fried the prawns and snapper fillet, uurgh. but you ordered it so you eat.

had a bottle of gianni gagliardo batie 2003 (their basic nebbiolo plus a little barbera drop)... garnet; hint of cinnamon and tobacco, strawberries(?), cranberries(?) on the nose; light-medium body, berry fruit, woodiness/cedar (hint); obvious tannins (not really fine but not unpleasent either); fresh acidity on the palate; longish finish. POP! [restaurant markup].

it always surprises me that the lighter sangiovese or nebbiolo based drinks can handle seafood especially that in tomato based preps.

had 6 shots and some free grappa to finish off. not a bad end to a dull day. BANG! of course.

18 April 2008

good 'morning'

3 shots later... seems a little over extracted and more bitter than usual today. but who am i to complain.

dry

not feeling myself today... (wonder who came up with the phrase...). anyway, it just occurred to me that i'd not had a proper shot in 48 hours ... a couple tasteless lattes and tea is all...tttea? ......... there's still work my table ........ work shot work shot work shot .............

thank god its friday?

been invited to a beer drinking binge ... don't feel like it. its not the company, the guys are an ok lot and i have'nt seen the whole bunch in a while. its just that i've gone off the stuff in the last few years. too tart and flavourless. maybe a pint but the fellas down gallons each time and in polite society one is oblidged to tag along. problem is, i'm polite... gastritis beckons... sigh. MILK OF MAGNESIA!

17 April 2008

another pharmacy

2 of my favorite delivery systems ... but where's the crema?

16 April 2008

hanoi daze

some pics, cambodage

14 April 2008

oh no ... another "dodgy" penalty and free kick

kinda res ipsa, don't you think ... they are just too mentally and physically tired.

our skills and the "i don't give 2 hoots about your reputation" attitude were apparent but ...

no other reason for an old pro to suddenly think thats he's playing volleyball.

any last words Arsene?

"oui oui"

"We lost on a penalty - that you can give or not give but we are used to that now - and on a free-kick when Gilberto did not touch him."

I might have guessed... jeez.

13 April 2008

drinks

had to pay up on the wager i lost, had the barolo de highbury over the weekend. a gianni gagliardo preve 2001,decanted for 1 hour.

translucent ruby colour; violets(?), plums, cedar and tobacco on the nose; latter 3 follow through on the palate together with fine tannins and refreshing acidity (no puckering here); medium bodied; balanced; long finish; very very nice indeed, could go another 5 years easy. BANG!

supportig cast of the simonsig tiara 2003, a south african bordeaux blend, provided a big oaky bang for the buck as usual while the chateau potensac 1998 medoc was good (the others did not think much of it) but rather overpriced here. BANG! and POP!

very agreeable few hours with friends ... would have been better if the goners weren't firing blanks ... sigh ... theres always next season.

10 April 2008

no satisfaction

just saw the oddest thing . . . has anyone else seen the louis vuitton advert with keith richards . . .? he looks like something from a vincent price movie . . . and they say mick's the ugly one . . . way "not" to go keith . . . 335 with the bigsby is nice though . . .go here (warning: those even mildly prone to myocardial infarction are advised to skip this)

09 April 2008

the inevitable escusso

the miser is at it again, not suprisingly:

he says "it's down to a DODGY decision by the referee I believe . . . " and " ALL the big decisions went against us ...". he must have list of these hardwired somewhere in his brain.

come on, that's the way the game is these days ... breathe on a striker and he drops. defenders should know better.

the miser should know better. this is the only thing that irritates me about the
man...

oi, stop wengking and get on with it, there's the top dog on sunday.

btw

the better team won anyway . . . notwithstanding the 'penalty' ;-) . . . AC . . . your call on the bottle :-)

gunners get to take an early shower . . . again

thats it, clobbered 4-2 at anfield. . . no silverware again this year . . . when a team (albeit talented) is so small something must give at the tail end of such a long and hard season. the guys are tired man . . . that miser must loosen the purse strings . for next season.

08 April 2008

my pharmacy

get my daily dose from a place near the office . . . just a 5 min. wobble

the stuffs rich, smooth, consistent and legal. whats more, its cheaper than the rather more tart and less flavoursome stuff being pumped out by the chains.
